Description
“Zorba the Greek” is a novel written by the Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis. The book was first published in 1946. The story is narrated by an intellectual who is known simply as “the boss” and follows his encounters with Alexis Zorba, a larger-than-life character full of passion and zest for life. Zorba becomes the boss’s close companion, and their interactions lead to a series of philosophical and existential reflections on life, work, and the pursuit of happiness.
The novel explores themes of freedom, passion, and the contrast between the rational, contemplative life of the mind and the spontaneous, exuberant life of the body. It’s considered one of Kazantzakis’s most famous works and has been adapted into various forms, including a well-known film adaptation titled “Zorba the Greek,” which was released in 1964 and starred Anthony Quinn as Zorba.
