Description
“The Voyage Out” is the first novel by Virginia Woolf, published in 1915. It follows the story of Rachel Vinrace, a young woman who embarks on a sea voyage from England to South America with her father and other travelers. Throughout the journey, Rachel experiences personal growth, encounters various characters, and grapples with her own identity and desires.
The novel explores themes such as social conventions, the search for meaning in life, and the limitations placed on women in early 20th-century society. “The Voyage Out” also showcases Woolf’s early experimentation with narrative techniques and her interest in depicting the inner lives of her characters.
While not as well-known as some of Woolf’s later works, such as “Mrs. Dalloway” or “To the Lighthouse,” “The Voyage Out” is still considered an important contribution to modernist literature and offers valuable insights into Woolf’s development as a writer.
