Description

Clayhanger is the first novel in a series of four by Arnold Bennett, collectively called The Clayhanger Family. Published in 1910, the novel is a coming-of-age story set in the industrial Midlands of Victorian England.

The Story

The novel follows Edwin Clayhanger, a young man who feels stifled by his life in the family printing business and his domineering father. Edwin longs for a more creative and fulfilling life. He becomes involved in a passionate but ultimately unsuccessful relationship with Hilda Lessways, a strong-willed and independent young woman.

Themes

Clayhanger explores a number of themes, including:

  • The struggle for identity: Edwin grapples with who he is and what he wants to do with his life. He feels trapped by his family background and social class.
  • The nature of love and desire: Edwin’s love for Hilda is intense but also complex. He is both attracted to her strength and intimidated by it.
  • The effects of social change: The novel is set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing society. The Industrial Revolution is transforming the English Midlands, and Edwin must find his place in this new world.
