Clayhanger is the first novel in a series of four by Arnold Bennett, collectively called The Clayhanger Family. Published in 1910, the novel is a coming-of-age story set in the industrial Midlands of Victorian England.
The Story
The novel follows Edwin Clayhanger, a young man who feels stifled by his life in the family printing business and his domineering father. Edwin longs for a more creative and fulfilling life. He becomes involved in a passionate but ultimately unsuccessful relationship with Hilda Lessways, a strong-willed and independent young woman.
Themes
Clayhanger explores a number of themes, including:
