Description
“The Tirukkural,” also known as the “Kural,” is a classic Tamil text written by Tiruvalluvar, a Tamil poet and philosopher believed to have lived sometime between the 2nd century BCE and the 5th century CE. It is considered one of the greatest works of Tamil literature and is highly revered in Tamil culture.
The Tirukkural consists of 1,330 couplets (or Kurals) divided into 133 chapters, each dealing with a specific aspect of human life and morality. The text covers a wide range of topics, including ethics, morality, virtue, governance, friendship, love, and spirituality. The couplets are concise and aphoristic, making them easy to remember and often quoted in daily life.
The Tirukkural is divided into three major sections:
1. Aram (Virtue): This section deals with ethical and moral principles, emphasizing the importance of living a virtuous life and upholding righteousness in all aspects of one’s conduct.
2. Porul (Wealth): This section focuses on matters related to wealth, economy, and governance, providing guidance on issues such as fiscal policy, trade, agriculture, and administration.
3. Inbam (Love): This section explores the nature of love, friendship, and family relationships, offering insights into human emotions and interpersonal dynamics.
