Description
“The Old Man and the Sea” is a novel written by American author Ernest Hemingway, and was first published in 1952. The story is set in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Havana, Cuba, and follows an aging fisherman named Santiago, who has gone 84 days without catching a fish. Determined to break his unlucky streak, Santiago sets out to sea alone, and after several days of fishing, hooks a giant marlin.
The majority of the novel takes place over the course of the three-day struggle between Santiago and the marlin. The novel explores themes of perseverance, determination, and the relationship between man and nature. Santiago’s struggle with the fish is also symbolic of his own personal struggles, as he reflects on his past and contemplates his own mortality.
“The Old Man and the Sea” is widely regarded as one of Hemingway’s greatest works, and has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. The novel’s simple, yet powerful prose and its exploration of universal themes have made it a favorite among readers and critics alike, and it remains a classic of American literature.
