Description
“The Lost Continent” is a science-fiction adventure novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, first published in 1916. The story is set in the future, where the world has been divided into different factions, and America has become a land of isolationism and ignorance.
The protagonist of the novel is Jefferson Turck, an officer in the US Navy who is sent on a mission to rescue a group of scientists who have been stranded on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean. However, as Turck and his crew approach the island, they are pulled into a vortex and transported to an unknown land that has been cut off from the rest of the world for thousands of years.
The land, which the natives call “Pellucidar,” is an underground world that is lit by a central sun. Turck and his crew discover that the land is populated by prehistoric creatures and primitive tribes of humans who are in a constant state of war. In order to survive and find a way back to their own world, Turck must navigate the dangerous and unfamiliar terrain of Pellucidar and battle against the warring tribes and deadly creatures that inhabit it.
“The Lost Continent” is a classic adventure novel that showcases Burroughs’ talent for world-building and vivid storytelling. The novel’s imaginative depiction of a lost world filled with strange creatures and ancient civilizations has influenced generations of science fiction and fantasy writers. It is also notable for its portrayal of the hero, Jefferson Turck, who is a flawed but ultimately heroic character that embodies the American spirit of adventure and perseverance.
