Description
The Exile: A Novel Based on the Life of Maharaja Duleep Singh by Navtej Sarna is a historical novel that tells the story of the last Maharaja of Punjab, Duleep Singh. The novel follows Duleep Singh’s life from his childhood in Punjab to his exile in England and his eventual death in Paris.
Duleep Singh was only 11 years old when his father, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, died in 1839. The Sikh kingdom was plunged into chaos, and Duleep Singh was soon forced to sign away his kingdom to the British. He was then sent to England to be raised as a Christian gentleman.
In England, Duleep Singh was given a lavish lifestyle and a good education. However, he was never truly happy. He longed for his homeland and his people. He also resented the British for taking his kingdom away from him.
Duleep Singh eventually converted back to Sikhism and tried to reclaim his throne. However, his efforts were unsuccessful. He spent the rest of his life living in exile, a tragic figure who was never able to find peace.
The Exile is a well-written and moving novel that tells the story of a remarkable man. Sarna does a good job of bringing Duleep Singh to life and showing the reader the challenges he faced. The novel is also a fascinating look at the history of Punjab and the British Raj.
