Description
This covers calamities–that is war–in Europe, China, Eastern Europe and Asia Minor, as well as Central Asia. The chapters cover The Hundred Years’ War; The Rise of the Ottomans; The Fury of the Steppes, that is Timur the Lame, known in the West as Tamerlane; China’s Brilliant Dynasty, that is the beginning of the Ming dynasty; & The African Empires, including Mali, Ethiopia, the Swahili ports, Akan, Yoruba, and Great Zimbabwe, as well as the African people as a whole at this time. The picture essays are on the Black Death, gardens, and martial pastimes, like wrestling, horsemanship, archery, and using a lance. As with all the books in this series pictures of artifacts are included as well as maps, and paintings reconstructing important things and places. The chapter on Africa is particularly interesting considering that in the next few centuries Europeans would be claiming that Africans were primitive savages to justify their taking them as slaves. This book shows that this was just not so. If you like world history, you’ll like this book.
