Description
“Rule Britannia” is a novel by Daphne du Maurier, published in 1972. The story is set in the near future, where Britain has withdrawn from the European Common Market and finds itself in political and economic turmoil. Against this backdrop, an English family inherits a Cornish mansion named “Clonmere” and decides to move there from London. However, their peaceful retreat is disrupted when a group of nationalist militants takes over the country, leading to a clash between the old values represented by the family and the new ideologies of the militants. The novel explores themes of nationalism, identity, and the fragility of democracy. Like much of du Maurier’s work, “Rule Britannia” combines elements of suspense, psychological insight, and social commentary.
