Description
“Palace Walk” is a novel by the Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz. It is the first book in the Cairo Trilogy, a series of novels that also includes “Palace of Desire” and “Sugar Street.” The trilogy follows the life of the Abd al-Jawad family in Cairo during the first half of the 20th century.
“Palace Walk” is set in Cairo during World War I and explores the dynamics of an upper-middle-class family. The patriarch of the family, Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad, is a conservative and authoritarian figure. The novel delves into the personal lives of the family members, their relationships, and the societal and political changes taking place in Egypt during this period.
Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988, and his works often depict the complexities of Egyptian society and the intertwining of personal and political narratives. “Palace Walk” was first published in Arabic in 1956, and the English translation by William Maynard Hutchins and Olive E. Kenny was published in 1990.
