Description
In 1942, Germany was searching for the assassins of Reinhard Heydrich, a high-ranking SS officer who was killed by Czech partisans. In retaliation, Germany selected Lidice, a village of around 500 people, to be completely destroyed as a warning to others.
On June 10, 1942, Germany rounded up all the men in Lidice and sent them to concentration camps, while the women and children were sent to other camps or executed on the spot. The village was then completely destroyed, with all the buildings burned to the ground and the farmland plowed over.
The book details the events leading up to the destruction of Lidice, as well as the aftermath, including the trials of the perpetrators. It also explores the larger context of the German occupation of Czechoslovakia and the resistance movement.
Overall, “Lidice: Sacrificial Village” is a harrowing account of one of the many atrocities committed during World War II, and serves as a reminder of the need to remain vigilant against tyranny and oppression.
