Description
Jataka Tales are a collection of ancient Buddhist stories that depict the previous lives of Gautama Buddha before he attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. The term “Jataka” means “birth” or “deeds” and refers to the stories that recount the various moral and ethical choices made by the Buddha in his previous existences.
The Jataka Tales are considered an integral part of Buddhist literature and are primarily found in the Pali Canon, the ancient scriptures of Theravada Buddhism. They are also present in other Buddhist traditions, including Mahayana and Vajrayana.
These tales often feature animals as the main characters, although human characters are also included. The animal characters possess human qualities and exhibit virtues such as compassion, generosity, honesty, and self-sacrifice. The stories aim to teach moral lessons and guide individuals on the path to enlightenment and virtuous living.
