Description
“Great Expectations” is a novel by Charles Dickens, first published in serial form from December 1860 to August 1861 and in book form in 1861. Set in early 19th-century England, the story follows the life of an orphan named Pip, who experiences profound changes in fortune and social status.
The novel begins with Pip as a young boy living with his sister and her husband in a humble village on the marshes. His life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters an escaped convict in a graveyard and is later introduced to the eccentric Miss Havisham, who lives in seclusion at Satis House with her ward, Estella. Pip becomes infatuated with Estella, and his desire to become a gentleman in order to win her affections sets the course for much of the story.
As Pip grows older, he receives a mysterious benefactor who provides him with the means to pursue his dream of becoming a gentleman in London. However, as he navigates the complexities of high society, he learns valuable lessons about the true nature of wealth, class, and love.
“Great Expectations” is celebrated for its rich characterization, intricate plot twists, and exploration of themes such as ambition, identity, and redemption. It is widely regarded as one of Dickens’s finest works and a classic of English literature.
