Description
“Crime and Punishment” is a novel written by Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published in 1866 and is considered one of the greatest works of psychological fiction. The novel explores themes of morality, guilt, redemption, and the consequences of one’s actions.
The story is set in St. Petersburg, Russia, and follows the life of Rodion Raskolnikov, a former student who is struggling with poverty and existential despair. Raskolnikov formulates a theory that some extraordinary people, or “supermen,” are exempt from conventional moral and legal obligations. He believes that if he commits a crime for a higher purpose, such as ridding the world of a corrupt pawnbroker, he can prove his superiority.
