Description
Asterix and the Great Crossing, written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo, is the 22nd installment in the popular Asterix comic book series. Published in 1975, it takes our beloved Gauls on a thrilling adventure across the Atlantic Ocean, encountering Vikings and discovering a “New World.
The story begins with Asterix and Obelix enjoying a simple fishing trip off the coast of Gaul. A sudden storm throws them off course, and they land on an unfamiliar shore, mistakenly believing it to be a Roman colony. Soon, they encounter a group of Vikings who are equally surprised by their presence.
The Vikings, led by the brave but gullible chieftain Olaf Gudrunsson (or Ødiuscomparissen in the original French), mistake Asterix and Obelix for natives of this “New World.” They capture them and take them aboard their ship, planning to present them as proof of their discovery to their skeptical chief back home.
Unbeknownst to the Vikings, the land they stumbled upon is actually North America, centuries before the arrival of Columbus. As Asterix and Obelix travel with the Vikings, they encounter various challenges and humorous situations, showcasing the cultural clashes between the Gauls and the Norsemen.
