Description
“Asterix and the Black Gold” is the twenty-sixth volume in the popular French comic book series “Asterix,” created by writer René Goscinny and illustrator Albert Uderzo. After Goscinny’s death in 1977, Uderzo continued to write and illustrate the series on his own.
The comic book series follows the adventures of a village of indomitable Gauls who resist Roman occupation during the time of Julius Caesar. The main characters are Asterix, a clever and brave warrior, and his best friend Obelix, who is superhumanly strong due to falling into a cauldron of magic potion as a child.
In “Asterix and the Black Gold,” the story revolves around a peculiar problem affecting the production of the Gauls’ famous magic potion, which gives them superhuman strength. The druid Getafix usually brews the potion using a secret formula, but in this volume, he faces an unexpected issue: the essential ingredient, rock oil (oil shale), is mysteriously disappearing from the earth.
The disappearing rock oil puts the entire village at risk, as they are unable to produce their potion. Asterix and Obelix embark on a journey to solve the mystery and find out who is stealing the precious resource. Their adventures lead them to various locations, including Roman-occupied territories and other regions.
As with other Asterix comic books, “Asterix and the Black Gold” combines humor, witty wordplay, and satirical commentary on historical and contemporary events. The series is celebrated for its clever storytelling, vibrant artwork, and colorful characters, making it enjoyable for readers of all ages.
