The novel tells the story of three friends – Chris Oriko, Sam Okoli, and Ikem Osodi – who are members of the ruling elite in Kangan. Chris is the Commissioner of Information, while Sam is the Minister of Finance, and Ikem is a journalist. As the three friends navigate the complex political landscape of Kangan, they begin to clash with the country’s military dictator, a man known only as “His Excellency”.
“Anthills of the Savannah” is known for its powerful and incisive critique of political corruption and authoritarianism in Africa. Achebe draws on his own experiences as a Nigerian writer and political activist to create a vivid and nuanced portrayal of the challenges facing African countries in the post-colonial era.
The novel received critical acclaim upon its release, and is considered one of Achebe’s most important works. It has been translated into several languages and is widely studied in universities and schools around the world.
