Description
“Dune” is a science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert, first published in 1965. It is set in the distant future in a feudal society where noble houses compete for power and control of the planet Arrakis, which is the only source of the spice melange, a drug that enhances human abilities and has become essential for interstellar travel.
The story follows the young nobleman Paul Atreides, whose family takes over control of Arrakis from their rivals, the Harkonnens. As Paul and his family navigate the complex political and social landscape of Arrakis, they find themselves embroiled in a struggle for survival against both their enemies and the harsh desert environment of the planet.
Throughout the novel, Herbert explores themes of power, politics, religion, ecology, and human evolution. He also delves into the complex relationships between characters, particularly between Paul and his mother, the Bene Gesserit witch Jessica, and between Paul and his Fremen followers.
“Dune” has been widely acclaimed as a masterpiece of science fiction and has influenced many other works in the genre. It has spawned several sequels, prequels, adaptations, and spin-offs, including a film adaptation directed by David Lynch in 1984 and a new adaptation directed by Denis Villeneuve set for release in 2021.
