Description
The novel is a historical fiction set in 17th century India during the reign of the Mughal Empire. It follows the story of Mubarak Ali, a eunuch who is intimately familiar with the court and all the princes and princesses of the time. The novel focuses on the conflict between two of Shah Jahan’s sons, Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb, and the battle for the throne that ensued between them.
The story is told through Mubarak Ali’s eyes, and the reader is taken on a journey through the royal palace, the harem, royal hunts, and the kingdoms of rival and vassal rulers. The novel describes six battles in vivid detail, and Mubarak Ali’s adventures take the reader from the lakes of Kashmir to the deserts of Sind and the lush forests of India.
