Description
“Variant” is a young adult dystopian novel written by Robison Wells. It was first published in 2011. The story is set in a mysterious and isolated boarding school called “The Academy,” where rebellious teenagers are sent by their parents for correction.
The protagonist, Benson Fisher, is a young orphan who sees The Academy as an opportunity for a fresh start. However, he soon discovers that the school is far from what it appears to be. The students are divided into different factions, each with its own set of rules and hierarchies. Escape from The Academy is impossible due to the surrounding fences and constant surveillance.
As Benson navigates the complex social dynamics of The Academy, he uncovers dark secrets and a conspiracy that puts his life at risk. The novel explores themes of identity, power struggles, and the price of freedom.
“Variant” received positive reviews for its suspenseful plot, engaging characters, and the way it keeps readers guessing. It is the first book in a trilogy, followed by “Feedback” (2012) and “Blackout” (2013). The series delves deeper into the mysteries of The Academy and the wider implications of the world in which Benson finds himself.
