Description
“The Voyage of Argo: The Argonautica” is an ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Apollonius of Rhodes. It is also simply known as the “Argonautica.” This work is one of the few surviving Hellenistic epic poems and is considered a significant literary achievement.
The Argonautica tells the story of Jason and the Argonauts’ quest for the Golden Fleece, which was located in the distant land of Colchis. The poem narrates their adventures and challenges during the journey, including encounters with mythical creatures and gods.
Apollonius of Rhodes, who lived in the 3rd century BCE, drew inspiration from earlier epic traditions, such as Homer’s works, but he introduced new elements and a more romantic tone. The Argonautica has been influential in later literature and has contributed to the development of the epic genre.
The title “The Voyage of Argo: The Argonautica” is often used in modern editions and translations of this ancient epic, making it more accessible to contemporary readers interested in Greek mythology and classical literature.
