Description

“The Selfish Gene” is a book written by Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist and author. The book was first published in 1976 and is considered one of the most influential popular science books of the 20th century. In “The Selfish Gene,” Dawkins introduces the concept of the “selfish gene” as a way to explain and understand the behavior and evolution of living organisms, particularly in the context of natural selection and evolution.

Dawkins argues that genes, as the fundamental units of inheritance, are the driving force behind the evolutionary process. He discusses how genes use organisms as vehicles to propagate themselves, leading to behaviors and traits that may not always seem beneficial for the individual but are advantageous for the genes’ survival and reproduction.

The book explores various aspects of evolutionary biology, including topics like altruism, kin selection, and the concept of the “selfish gene.” It has had a profound impact on the fields of biology, genetics, and the understanding of evolution and natural selection.

“The Selfish Gene” is known for its clear and engaging writing style, and it remains an important work in the field of evolutionary biology and popular science literature.

Written in the best possible way for the common folks to understand. This book gives an insight into the selfishness shown by our genes and the altruism that we show towards our kin. After reading this book I started seeing myself as a different being. It is a must read. And also I would like to mention that the book was delivered in good condition.

  2. Aniket Gaurav (Verified Purchase)

Mr. Dawkins through this book has opened a floodgate of whole new ideas on the theory of evolution. In the book he has brought out the genes eye view of evolution in the most impressive style through myriads of arguments and analysis. Though his ideas may be unconventional to many readers nonetheless they are true. No doubt this is one of the finest books the human mind has ever produced.

  3. Geetha George (Verified Purchase)

Whether one likes it or not the struggle between genes and intelligence has already begun. It remains to be seen whether the two continue to remain symbiotic or, part ways at some time in the future. Perhaps, only time can tell. Highly recommended!

  4. pintu banerjee (Verified Purchase)

The way author explained evolution is just amazing. He even provided arguements in support of aswell as against his explanation at the end of the book. It quite transformed my outlook and added meaning to my understanding. The only thing that I could complain of is that he did not mention or describe the mathematical models from which he deduced certain conclusions at various points witin the text. Why should I take a number or ratio for granted? – only this explanation has been left out of this book, rest is mind blowing!

  5. Sanjib Goswami (Verified Purchase)

Must read – for all those who science. Not meant for fundamentalists and gullible people. Open minded, rational academicians will love this book, that explains human life from the evolutionary scientific point of view.
