Description
The Purgatorio by Dante Alighieri is the second part of the Divine Comedy, following the Inferno and preceding the Paradiso. It chronicles Dante’s ascent of Mount Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, as he journeys through the realm where souls are purified before entering Paradise.
Unlike the dark and harrowing tone of the Inferno, the Purgatorio is marked by hope, spiritual growth, and the promise of redemption. The mountain is divided into terraces, each representing one of the seven deadly sins. Souls undergo penance on each level, gradually shedding their sins and progressing toward divine grace. Dante encounters historical and mythological figures who share their stories and wisdom, reflecting on the nature of sin, repentance, and human frailty.
The poem is rich in allegory, theological insight, and poetic beauty. It emphasizes the power of free will, the importance of moral choice, and the soul’s potential for transformation. As Dante ascends the mountain, his understanding deepens, preparing him for the ultimate vision of divine love that awaits in the Paradiso.
