Description
The Green Mile by Stephen King is a deeply emotional and thought-provoking novel that blends supernatural elements with a powerful human story. Originally published as a serialized novel in six parts in 1996, it was later compiled into a single volume.
Set in 1932, the story is narrated by Paul Edgecombe, a death row prison guard at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. He recalls his experiences overseeing inmates awaiting execution, particularly John Coffey, a towering Black man convicted of a brutal crime. However, as Paul gets to know Coffey, he begins to doubt his guilt. Coffey possesses an extraordinary ability to heal people, hinting at a deeper mystery surrounding him. As the execution date approaches, Paul faces a moral dilemma that forces him to question justice, fate, and the nature of miracles.
The novel is a mix of historical fiction, crime, and the supernatural, with strong themes of compassion, injustice, and redemption. It remains one of King’s most moving works, made even more popular by the 1999 film adaptation starring Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan.
