Description

“Never Let Me Go” is a novel written by Kazuo Ishiguro, a British author of Japanese descent. Published in 2005, the book has garnered critical acclaim and has been widely recognized as one of Ishiguro’s notable works.

“Never Let Me Go” is set in a dystopian alternate reality and follows the lives of three friends: Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy. The story is narrated by Kathy as she reflects on her upbringing and the experiences they shared at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. As the narrative unfolds, the true nature of their existence and purpose becomes gradually revealed.

The novel explores themes of identity, memory, mortality, and the ethical implications of science and technology. It delves into the characters’ emotional journeys and the challenges they face as they grapple with their destinies within a society that views them as different and disposable.

Kazuo Ishiguro’s writing style is known for its introspective and nuanced exploration of human emotions and relationships. “Never Let Me Go” exemplifies his ability to create thought-provoking narratives that raise profound questions about the human condition.

The book was adapted into a film in 2010, directed by Mark Romanek and starring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley.

I read this after enjoying the film, and I wasn’t disappointed. The characters’ internal lives are well written, and you feel a really close connection with them. It’s a disturbing idea at the heart of the plot and while this does cast a shadow over the story, it never becomes macabre but instead provokes reflecting about social control and individual freewill. But it’s not densely written and is in fact very simply written. A beautiful moving read.

For the first 200 pages I was of the opinion that this is a good book but there wasn’t anything great, however, as soon I was nearing the end, my love for this book augmented unexpectedly and I had a profound love for Ishiguro .

If you haven’t read this book or seen the movie, please do. It’s a wonderful piece of literature that will really make you consider life and the rules we set. I won’t say more, other than to say, buy it and read it.
