Description

“Behold the Dreamers” is a novel written by Imbolo Mbue and published in 2016. The story follows the lives of two couples in New York City in the years leading up to the financial crisis of 2008.

Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant, and his wife Neni, also from Cameroon, are struggling to make ends meet in the city. Jende works as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a wealthy executive at Lehman Brothers, while Neni is studying to become a pharmacist.

Meanwhile, Clark and his wife Cindy are living a lavish lifestyle, but their marriage is strained by Clark’s workaholism and infidelity. As the financial crisis begins to unfold, the lives of these two couples become increasingly intertwined, and they must all face difficult choices about what they are willing to sacrifice to achieve their dreams.

The novel explores themes of immigration, race, class, and the American Dream, and has been praised for its nuanced portrayal of complex characters and its incisive commentary on contemporary society. It was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and won the 2017 Blue Metropolis First Peoples Literary Prize.
