Description

“And Then There Were None” is a mystery novel written by the British author Agatha Christie. It was first published in 1939 under the title “Ten Little Niggers” in the UK (the title was changed due to its racial implications in later editions) and as “And Then There Were None” in the United States. The novel is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous and successful works and is considered a classic of the mystery genre.

The story revolves around ten strangers who are invited to a remote and isolated island called Soldier Island. Each of the characters has been lured there under different pretenses, such as a job offer or a weekend getaway. Soon after their arrival, they discover that their mysterious host is absent, and they are left to fend for themselves.

As the story unfolds, a recording accuses each of the guests of murder, and it becomes clear that they have all been brought to the island for a sinister purpose. The group becomes increasingly paranoid and fearful as they are killed off one by one in a manner that mirrors the nursery rhyme “Ten Little Soldiers” (also known as “Ten Little Indians” in some versions), which is displayed in their accommodations.

The tension in the novel builds as the characters try to figure out who among them is the murderer or if someone else is hiding on the island. Suspicion, paranoia, and fear run rampant as they realize that there may be no escape from their predicament.

Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” is celebrated for its clever plot, intricate characters, and skillful handling of suspense and mystery. It is often considered one of her best works and is a classic in the genre of detective fiction. The novel has been adapted into various films, television series, and stage productions and remains a popular and enduring mystery story.
