Description

Agnes Grey (Penguin Classics) revolves around a family that becomes impoverished after a financial breakdown. The central character in the novel is Agnes Grey, who is determined to find work as a governess and help her family by working her way out. The storyline portrays the hurdles that Agnes faces because of the unmanageable Bloomfield children and again due to the apathy of the arrogant Murray family. The only person with any good will is Mr Weston. She is neither a member of the family nor a servant and faces much difficulty in her job as a governess.

Agnes Grey is the author’s first novel and is based on her own experiences. This book shows the desperation of unmarried, educated women to whom becoming a governess was the only respectable career in Victorian society.

Agnes Grey (Penguin Classics) was published by Penguin UK in 1989 and is available in the form of a paperback.

  1. Kiran Kumar (Verified Purchase)

Great story. Such a shame she only wrote two books before she prematurely died in her twenties. Reading her other book at the moment.

Though Agnes Grey is a first novel by the least known of the Bronte sisters, I found that I cared about Agnes, and eagerly read through to the end. There is a little bit of moralising, which is standard for fiction of the date, but interesting situations and believable characters make this into a book I enjoyed very much and will probably read again.

  3. archa (Verified Purchase)

I very much enjoyed reading this novel, the only work by Anne Bronte, having previously not known her work. It explores Victorian middle-class norms and reveals much about their dysfunctional nature, in a novel that in which I quickly became absorbed. Unlike other literary works from that era it is not overly long and Bronte gets to the point of the story within the first few pages. Highly recommended.

  4. SRIKANTH S (Verified Purchase)

This story brings home to us the importance of good values in life , which , I think , can never be overemphasized .

  5. Nitesh Gupta (Verified Purchase)

Bronte sisters never fails to amaze one with their writing.
